Africa: Introduction

This website collects some of the photographs I took during three different trips to Africa. From June 5 to August 23, 1998 I traveled to Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Zambia and Zimbabwe. I returned to Africa in September 2000 for about a week-and-a-half, primarily to see the gorillas, but also the other sights of Uganda. I spent another month in Africa during June and July, 2002. This time I visited South Africa and Namibia.

There are just a few photographs in the "slide show" at the right that (I hope) will whet your appetite for more. The vast majority of photos (more than 750 in all) is contained in the other pages of "Africa on the Matrix."

These pages are divided into three major categories. The Animals & Birds section includes (as you might guess) most of the photographs of African wildlife. In many cases, these photos are close-ups and do not offer too much of an idea of the surrounding landscapes.

In order to give a better picture of what Africa itself looks like, and some of its people, I have included a separate section called People & Places. If you are planning to visit a certain area (or game park) of Africa, perhaps you will find some photos that offer an idea of what your destination will look like. Each photo also includes information about where and when it was taken.

For more photos or information about the animals, people and places I saw, select one of the pages from the drop-down menus at the bottom of each page.

Most of the photographs can be seen in a window on the upper-right portion of the page. Some pages, however, also offer additional photographs that will run in a separate pop-up slide show window. These extra slide shows are listed toward the bottom of the page.

Finally, there are a number of Information pages about Africa, the game parks I visited (including my subjective review of each), some tips for photographers, and a short list of recommended books.
